The tips are a slide over from the 1950′s, so any 1950′s makeup guide would give you all the tricks you need to perfect the look. Here we’ve transcribed the video with optimized images.

1960′s Makeup base.

1-1960's-Makeup-base.

Firstly – remove the makeup you have on. Use a cleanser and sponge, which also helps tone your skin.

1960′s Makeup foundation.

3-1960's-Makeup-foundation.

Next comes the foundation. Remember this should blend naturally with your own skin color. Apply in spots and smooth gently in

1960′s Makeup – Rouge.

4-1960's-Makeup---Rouge

Rouge must be applied also in three dots. The proper method of application is to dab it on in spots close to the cheek bone and high up near the eye zone. If you smile you can see the natural lines of the face to blend the rouge in to.

The 1960′s Makeup – eye shadow.

5-The-1960's-Makeup---eye-shadow.

Then there’s eyeshadow which you should stipple on, under the powder, close to the lashes and blend it up and out to the upper corner of the eye.

1960s makeup – Powder.

6-1960s-makeup-–-Powder.

Use powder lavishly. Leave it on for a few seconds and then smooth it off with a pad.

1960s makeup tutorial – Mascara.

7-1960s-makeup-tutorial-mascara2

Brushing the eyebrows with a clean brush – shapes the brows and then comes the mascara. Apply in a couple of thin coats rather than one heavy coat.

8-1960s-makeup-tutorial-lipsb

For the lips, use a brush and wait at least five minutes before blotting.

This video of ours has been extremely popular and was even featured recently by the UK Daily Mail – Glamourdaze 1940′s makeup . Miss Ratherly Stern ( our pet name for the prim tutor) instructs her girls on the correct method of applying makeup.A big part of the daily routine in the 1940′s was in skin preparation and the use of vanishing cream – Grandmothers old beauty trick. How many women use it nowadays I wonder? Here’s a complete instructional transcript complete with images.

Take it away Miss Stern.

The 1940′s Makeup Pat.

“With the help of these two young ladies I’m going to try and give you a few pointers on applying your makeup.

Vintage-1940s-makeup-tutorial-2--makeup-pat

The first step is a smooth base – for that you can either use a makeup pat or a vanishing cream. If the pat is used you blend it over your entire face using a damp sponge or cotton.
Apply it sparingly and while still moist – blend it to super smoothness from your finger tips.”

Vintage-1940s-makeup-tutorial-3b--vanishing-cream1
( Ed – In the video the girls face instantly takes on a whiter complexion after this)

“If instead you use vanishing cream – a light touch is equally important – spreading evenly, clear up to the hair line.”

1940′s Rouge application – The Tri-dot Method.

Vintage-1940s-makeup-tutorial-4b---rouge

“If you use rouge – try putting it on using the ‘tri-dot system’. One dot directly under the pupil of the eye; the second on the cheekbone; and the third -no lower than the tip of the nose.
Now fill in the ‘triangle’ lightly and blend in careful till no one can see that the rouge is there – not even you! Nothing dates you more than rouge ‘that shows’

1940′s Lipstick application.

“Lipstick is your ‘exclamation point’ Use it sparingly but well. Use two strokes to outline the upper lip and one long stroke for the lower. Fill in with up and down strokes, so that the lipstick goes with the grain of the skin.

Vintage-1940s-makeup-tutorial-5--lipstick

1940′s Makeup Harmony.

” Be sure that your lipstick harmonizes with your rouge and your nail polish and check to see if there are any reds in your costume to see that everything is in key. After applying your lipstick, blot off the excess with a tissue.

Vintage-1940s-makeup-tutorial-5--lipstick4

Last – your powder. I goes over your makeup and all over your face. Choose the shade carefully. When you find one that blends in with the color of your skin – no lighter, then that is your shade.

Vintage-1940s-makeup-tutorial-6---powder
If your skin is on the sallow side, you’ll want to powder, one note rosier. Please avoid the ‘too powdered look’ Use a clean puff or fresh piece of cotton and keep it well filled. Press it lightly all over your face, starting at the forehead and working down. Use a loosely folded tissue to brush excess powder away, giving particular attention
to hairline and brows.

Vintage-1940s-makeup-tutorial-7--mirror
Before you leave the mirror – take a good look at your face, and remember – lots of people will see you in profile, so be sure that the makeup goes all the way around to the side.

Vintage Makeup Tutorial 1938 – Pathe archive http://vintagemakeupguide.com/2013/04/vintage-makeup-tutorial-1938-pathe-archive/ http://vintagemakeupguide.com/2013/04/vintage-makeup-tutorial-1938-pathe-archive/#comments Fri, 19 Apr 2013 12:53:24 +0000 Redvarnish http://vintagemakeupguide.com/?p=802 vintage-1930s-makeup-tutorial1

Vintage Makeup Tutorial 1938 – Pathe archive.

A cute and actually rather informative 1930s makeup tutorial film for cinema release and possible early TV release also. Voiced naturally by a ‘man’ the commentary is very Harry Enfiled’s Chomondley Warner, but charming in it’s own patronizing way.

“Making up – whether after a tip or a spot in the ladies room, is an art if only one knows how. And continental beauty experts say that one must be able to size up the face as well. In other wards – makeup is made to measure! ”

1930s Makeup – Face Contouring.

vintage-1930s-makeup-tutorial2

“With a  perfect ‘oval face’ – this triangle on her face marks the very limit of operations.

vintage-1930s-makeup-tutorial3
When the forehead nose and chin are of different lengths, the ‘cheeky’ triangle is shaped accordingly. Thus making up in makeup what the face lacks in uniformity. It’s all rather touching don’t you think? ”

vintage-1930s-makeup-tutorial3b

The effect is seen below in these two pictures of the same face – on the left ‘bad makeup’ and on the right – good makeup!  (Editor – seems to simply have more lipstick than the other).

vintage-1930s-makeup-tutorial4

1930s Lip Contouring.

vintage-1930s-makeup-tutorial5

“Now the lips – this is where we get warmed up to our subject.

vintage-1930s-makeup-tutorial6

If the mouth is not so cupids bow-ish and the lips are a teeny wee bit heavy – pardon us ladies, you should slightly exaggerate the middle to form a V – and avoid coloring the extreme ends.

vintage-1930s-makeup-tutorial7

With thin lips – where is that cat? The middle V must be ‘enlarged’ to shorten the space under the nose, and the ends left severely alone again.” Voila !

Now here’s a girl with hardly any makeup. She’s attractive but is she making the best of herself?
Where should she put the accent?
First we’ll tackle the eyebrows.

Hollywood-Eyebrows-1930s-Makeup-Tutorial-B

We know where to draw the line. Brows are extended slightly, and
shaped to provide a pleasing frame for the liquid. Now a subtle touch of eyeshadow completes the picture.

If you need to wear glasses – be sure that dark frames don’t make you look too severe!
Frames should be as unobtrusive as possible and the accent on the mouth distracts attention from them.

These aren’t lips that pass in the night – they can be made permanently attractive by proper makeup.
